Unpaid Wages Dispute: Benjamin Mendy Takes Legal Action Against Manchester City

In a recent development, Benjamin Mendy, the former Manchester City defender, has initiated a “multi-million-pound” claim against the club for alleged unpaid wages. The 29-year-old filed the claim with the Employment Tribunal, citing “unauthorised deductions from wages” following his charges of rape and sexual assault in 2021. Mendy was acquitted on all counts earlier this year after a retrial at Chester Crown Court.

The legal action comes as Mendy seeks the return of unpaid wages covering the period until the conclusion of his contract in June 2023. Nick De Marco KC, representing Mendy, confirmed the filing of the claim and stated that Manchester City failed to pay the player any wages from September 2021, when he faced charges, until the end of his contract.

The statement from Nick De Marco KC, instructed by Laffer Abogados (Madrid), reads, “Manchester City FC failed to pay Mr Mendy any wages at all from September 2021, following Mr Mendy being charged with various offences, all of which he was subsequently acquitted of, until the end of his contract in June 2023. The claim will come before an Employment Tribunal.”

Mendy, who became the Premier League’s most expensive defender in 2017 when City acquired him from Monaco for £52 million, enjoyed success with the club, winning three titles and contributing to France’s World Cup victory in 2018. His last appearance for Manchester City was in August 2021, and he currently plays for Lorient in Ligue 1.

Manchester City has not provided a comment regarding the legal action when approached by Sky Sports News.
