Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze Faces Extended Sideline with Ankle Injury

Crystal Palace midfielder Eberechi Eze is set to miss crucial Premier League clashes against West Ham United and Bournemouth due to an ankle ligament injury, leaving Palace fans and manager Roy Hodgson frustrated.

Injury Blow Against Luton

Eze’s injury occurred during Palace’s 2-1 defeat at Kenilworth Road, where a tangle with Luton’s Gabriel Osho led to the defender landing on Eze’s ankle. Hodgson expressed displeasure post-match, highlighting the unnecessary nature of the incident and its impact on one of Palace’s key players.

Hodgson’s Frustration

Roy Hodgson expressed frustration, stating, “We were particularly frustrated because it was so unnecessary, to land on [Eze] and restrain him like [Osho] did, for that just to be waved aside, not only did we not get a free kick in a dangerous position, we also lost one of our most important players.”

Severity of the Injury

Initially, Eze attempted to play on but was eventually forced off early in the second half. The ankle ligament injury is expected to sideline him for three to four weeks, possibly extending to the rest of 2023.

A Series of Setbacks

This injury adds to Eze’s recent challenges, having only recently returned from a month-long absence due to a hamstring injury. The 25-year-old missed England’s crucial Euro 2024 qualification matches and faces uncertainty regarding his place in the national squad if injuries persist.

Manager’s Concerns

With mounting injuries, including Cheick Doucoure’s extended absence, Hodgson is eager for Eze’s swift recovery, considering Palace’s demanding schedule. The hope is to welcome back the top scorer from the previous season to bolster the squad.
